I said I was happy to give it a try but that it wasn’t what I usually did. She gave me an old black and white photo to work from. There was a lovely elegance to the couple and a vivacity in their poses which I hope I caught successfully. The faces were really quite tricky as the photo was small and became too fuzzy if I enlarged it digitally. In the end though the client was very happy and said I had caught the likenesses well. A couple of days into the 10 day exhibition a lady walked in, looked around and then asked if I had any paintings of the Pantiles and she loved my style and had been looking for a suitable painting for years. I offered to paint the picture for her and she agreed. She particularly wanted the painting to feature the Pantiles Clock and the Chalybeate Spring building. I took a series of photos for her and she decided on this view. There were several people in original as well as bits of rubbish. I decided it would look better without them as they obscured the view and this meant more photos so that I could reconstruct the places obstructed. The painting was delivered to the framers on 10th November 2022 where the client and I met to discuss the frame. The little islands are just craggy outcrops and not inhabited. I decided to use a silver ground for this painting and then paint over it with oils heavily diluted with my special medium which I mix myself. This allows the silver ground to shine through to some extent helping to recreate the shimmering light on the sea. It also meant the titanium white of the clouds leaked creating interesting zigzag effects which semi-abstract the painting and add to the mysterious quality of the whole. I thought long and hard about how to reproduce the glowing sky and in the end I opted to use a bright yellow underpainting and then add the reds and blues with glazes so that the yellow still shone through. This is basically the technique that was used to paint jewels by artists like Jan Van Eyck in the early 15th Century. I like to think I’m doing the same thing in my own little way. We took the opportunity to visit Syracuse and in the archaeological park there found this wonderful cave. Apparently the slaves who built the original city were housed in this cave. I can’t imagine how spooky it must have been for them. The point where I stood to take the photo on which this painting is based is deep inside where no light enters and mobile phone torches barely penetrate. The weather was lovely and we went on wonderful walks along the cliffs. This is the view from the man-made levee that protects the harbour. I loved the difference in texture between the smooth rocks of the levee and the weird natural forms of the rocks off shore. The reference photograph was provided by a member of the group and is of a view near Windmill Hill Woods, in Ludgershall, Wiltshire. Up on the cliff though the view was stunning. I loved the different colours in the water caused by the seaweed and the gentle ripples of the sea which make a sort of frill around the line of Man O War Beach. I couldn’t believe the turquoise colour of the water and loved the contrast made by the foam against the water and the dark rocks. I enjoyed the challenge of this painting with the precision needed for the rocks one the one hand and the freedom of painting the water on the other.
